Oxandrolone (Anavar) is a 17-alpha-alkylated oral anabolic steroid and a structural derivative of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). Originally developed to support weight gain in muscle-wasting conditions, it has been used medically to treat HIV-related cachexia, Turner syndrome, anemia, osteoporosis and recovery from severe burns.

Oxandrolone does not convert to estrogen, eliminating the risk of water retention or gynecomastia, and shows only mild androgenic activity — making it well tolerated by both men and women at appropriate doses.
